Rocky Top Farm
Rocky Top is a hilly and rocky property that runs behind the original Frogmore Creek Vineyard in Penna, just outside the Coal River Valley.
Of the 200 acre property, 4 acres make up our current market garden, 20 acres is a dedicated wildlife conservation area and the remainder is a work in progress.
The soils are black cracking clay, produced from parent rock called dolerite which produce soils which are very rich in nutrients and high in most minerals.
My partner Joyce and I (Tony) hail originally from the U.S. but we both fell in love with Australia in 1990 and have never looked back!
We began market gardening as Rocky Top after the sale of the original Frogmore Creek vineyard to Jansz.
I have been involved in organic farming in some shape or form for the last 40 years. I firmly believe that small-scale production of high quality produce is the future for Tasmania and am actively working towards this vision by mentoring and supporting producers through my role as President of Sprout Tasmania.
Out of all that we produce at Rocky Top, my current favourite thing is roasted freshly dug pink eyes, but that is this week.
Rocky Top Grows, Nurtures and Shares. We grow high quality vegetables using the best heirloom varieties, nurture them naturally with organic amendments and share the full flavored, nutrient-rich products with you.
Not only do we grow, nurture and share our produce at Rocky Top but we also grow a farming community through Sprout, nurture ideas and relationships, and share knowledge so that we can build a stronger, more sustainable local food system.
Tony was the first producer to go through the Sprout Producers Program.
